About Our Church

Who We Are

UCC Church0001

As the first Congregational church in the Dakota Territory – founded in 1868 by Joseph Ward – we celebrate and honor our history, but never take our eyes off God’s vision for the future and our commitment to mission and ministry in the present.

Now a part of the United Church of Christ, we call ourselves the United Church of Christ (Congregational) and work hard to serve an ever-changing society, here at home and around the world.

Here is Yankton, South Dakota, – population 14,500+ -- founded in the 1860s on the banks of the Missouri River. Yankton is a recreational mecca, a college town, a medical center, and much

more, and we have always been a part of its life and mission.

These days, our historic building is known to many as the home (since 1997) of the Yankton Area Banquet, which feeds 300 people every Thursday and the first and third Tuesdays of each month with our kitchen and in our fellowship hall. We purchase and hang drywall for at least one Habitat for Humanity house each year. The Sack Pack program, which provides weekend meals to elementary-age children, had its first physical home in one of our buildings with our then-pastor and several members of our congregation on its board.

We are also well- and widely-known for our contributions to the music of StainedGlassYankton and the area. Our 45-member adult choir sings every Sunday, September through May, and offers at least two concerts each year, accompanied by orchestra, brass, and other instruments. The J. Laiten Weed Scholarships – named for a former choir director – are given each year to four students studying music at Mount Marty College, and the Weed Brass bring special music to our worship on a regular basis.

So, come as you are, to the Yankton United Church of Christ (Congregational). All are truly welcome. We are an open church, accepting of different beliefs, willing to share in discussion, and we enjoy each other’s company as we do so. We strive to provide opportunities for seekers of all ages, to strengthen their faith and expand their knowledge of God through Bible studies, group discussion, self-reflection, excellent worship and preaching, and our walk with each other as we discover God’s plan for us and for our ministry.
