Our Church

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing, some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it."   — Hebrews 13:2

Mission & Purpose

The United Church of Christ (Congregational) of Yankton, SD seeks to be faithful to its historical roots while showing God's work in the life of the church, the community and the greater world.

How do we fulfill that

Mission & Purpose?

We attempt to achieve our mission by:

  1. Worshiping God through word, sacraments and music.
  2. Being instruments of God's love and mercy.
  3. Continually learning about and growing in our understanding of God's creation.
  4. Being responsible stewards of God's gifts to us.
  5. Welcoming all with the love of God through Jesus Christ.
  6. Involving ourselves in the life of the congregation and community.

Who We Are

As the first Congregational church in the Dakota Territory – founded in 1868 – we celebrate and honor our history, but never take our eyes off God’s vision for the future and our commitment to mission and ministry in the present.

Now a part of the United Church of Christ, we call ourselves the United Church of Christ (Congregational) and work hard to serve an ever-changing society, here at home and around the world.

Yankton, South Dakota (population 14,700) was founded in the 1860s on the banks of the Missouri River. Yankton is a recreational mecca, a college town, a medical center, and much more. The church has always been a part of it's life and mission.

Church Steps

Since 1997, our historic building has been known to many as the home of the Yankton Area Banquet, feeding 300 people in our Fellowship Hall the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month and every Thursday.

We purchase and hang drywall for at least one Habitat for Humanity house each year.

The Sack Pack program provides weekend meals to elementary-age children and had its first home in our building with our then-pastor and several members of our congregation on its board.

We are also well- and widely-known for our contributions to the music of Yankton. Our 45-member Adult Choir sings every Sunday (Sept.–May) and offers at least two orchestra accompanied concerts each year.

The J. Laiten Weed Scholarships — named for a former choir director — are awarded annually to four students studying music at Mount Marty College.  These students form The Weed Ensemble which brings special music to our worship on a regular basis

A place Where Everyone is Welcome

All are truly welcome. We are an Open and Affirming church, accepting of different beliefs, willing to share in discussion, and we enjoy each other’s company as we do so. We strive to provide opportunities for seekers of all ages, to strengthen their faith and expand their knowledge of God through Bible studies, group discussion, self-reflection, excellent worship and preaching, and our walk with each other as we discover God’s plan for us and for our ministry.
